Harvest two weeks to a month behind normal

Missouri

Killing frosts occurred across parts of the state during the week ending Oct. 18, while wet conditions hampered harvest, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Missouri Field Office, Oct. 19.

Harvest is two weeks to a month behind normal. Topsoil moisture, statewide, is rated 64 percent adequate, and 36 percent surplus. There were 2.2 days suitable for fieldwork. Fall tillage is 4 percent complete, 17 days behind last year and normal.

Temperatures averaged 9 to 13 degrees below average across the state. Rainfall averaged 1.03 inches for the week. The east-central district recorded the most precipitation with 1.63 inches, while the northwest district reported 0.54 of an inch. Pulaski, Warren, and St. Charles counties reported over 2 inches during the week.

Ninety-three percent of the corn is mature, even with last year but 14 days behind a normal of 99 percent. Corn harvest is 40 percent complete, 7 days behind last year, and 27 days behind the normal of 77 percent. The moisture content of corn harvested is 19 percent statewide with a range of 15 to 21 percent. Corn condition is rated 3 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 45 percent good, and 15 percent excellent.

Soybeans turning color is at 95 percent. Eighty-three percent of soybeans are dropping leaves, with 66 percent of the soybeans rated mature. Soybean harvest is 22 percent complete, 4 days behind last year and 13 days behind a normal of 49 percent. Soybean condition is rated 3 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 15 percent excellent.

Cotton opening bolls is at 80 percent, 22 days behind last year and 25 days behind normal. Cotton harvest is 5 percent, 21 days behind last year and 32 days behind normal. Cotton condition is 13 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Rice harvest is 60 percent complete, 13 days behind last year and 18 days behind a normal of 91 percent.

Sorghum turning color is 96 percent complete. Sorghum mature is at 76 percent, 3 days behind last year and 16 days behind normal. The sorghum harvest is 24 percent complete, 15 days behind last year and 26 days behind the normal of 63 percent. Sorghum condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Winter wheat seeding is 15 percent complete, 8 days behind last year and 13 days behind a normal of 42 percent. Emergence is at 10 percent, similar to last year but 6 days behind normal.

Pasture condition is rated 2 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 66 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.
