Harvest of late season crops continues at an average pace

Colorado

Precipitation and temperatures across most of Colorado were below average during the week ending Oct. 18, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, Oct. 19.

Harvest of late season crops continues at an average pace. These conditions allowed producers 6.0 days in the field.

Spring wheat harvest was virtually complete last week. The winter wheat crop progressed to 95 percent seeded and 74 percent emerged by the end of the week, 12 percentage points behind the 5-year average.

Late season crops continue to be rated in good condition. Sorghum progressed to 25 percent harvested, slightly behind the average. Corn was 34 percent harvested this week, 9 points behind last year but the same as the 5-year average. Sunflowers, reported at 37 percent harvested, are 11 points behind their 5-year average. Dry bean harvest increased to 81 percent complete, the same as the average, while sugarbeets were 63 percent harvested, 25 percentage points ahead of the average.

Conditions for pasture and range across Colorado remained in good condition for the week. The alfalfa crop ended the week in mostly good condition with fourth cutting alfalfa, at 40 percent complete, lagging behind the 5-year average by 15 percentage points.

Livestock in Colorado are rated in good condition again this week. Death losses for cattle and sheep were rated average, while stored feed supplies remained above average for this time of the year.
