Mushrush honored as 2009 Red Angus Breeder of the Year

Kansas

Joe and Connie Mushrush, Mushrush Red Angus, Strong City, Kan., received the 2009 Red Angus Breeder of the Year Award at the National Red Angus Convention in Mahnomen, Minn., Sept. 16 to 19. Frank Wedel of Leoti, Kan., fellow Red Angus breeder, presented the award to Mushrushes.

Mushrushes purchased their first Red Angus cows in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Their operation has expanded to now involve three generations of their family. They are one of the largest ranches in the Red Angus business, marketing nearly 200 bulls annually in their production sale.

"They may not have sold bulls for hundreds of thousands of dollars or sold any bulls to studs," said Wedel. "But their daring pursuit of excellence has allowed them to expand their business to now include people from a great geographic area that are grasped by their genetics."

Wedel also said, "Their customer service is one to envy." Mushrushes purchase 400 to 500 head of their customers' calves and enroll the steers in Red Angus' Feeder Calf Certification Program. They market the heifer calves as Pro-Cow replacement females.

Both Joe and Connie give freely of their time in their community, Kansas Red Angus Association and Red Angus Association of America. Joe is currently serving his second term as the District 6 Great Plains director and is RAAA First Vice President.
