Groups to host natural resources conference in February

Kansas

On Feb. 4 and 5, 2010, six professional societies that promote the wise use and management of Kansas' natural resources are sponsoring the third Kansas Natural Resources Conference at the Airport Hilton in Wichita. The theme of the conference is "Kansas Waters--Signs of Prosperity and Health." Early registration is open until Jan. 15, 2010.

"You need to mark your calendar and register for this conference," said Dan Meyerhoff, steering committee chairperson. "Registration information is available on the Internet at the website www.kansasnrc.com.

Those interested in the conference theme should find that the conference speakers, concurrent sessions, and tradeshow will provide a variety of information about water."

"The call for oral and poster papers is now open with abstracts due on Dec. 4," said Keith Harmoney, presentation chairman. "Last year we had over 50 presentations and we hope to have even more this year with a theme that is so timely."

"We especially encourage presentations related Kansas water resources such as the management and impact of streams, reservoirs, and aquifers; however, any and all natural resource topics will be considered," said Harmoney.

"We encourage professionals and students to present on any natural resource-related topic of importance to Kansas and the region." Detailed information for submitting presentations is on the website www.kansasnrc.com.

The plenary session speakers will address the conference theme as follows:

--Kansas Water Plan Update and Reservoir Sustainability Initiative--Tracy Streeter is the executive director of the Kansas Water Office, Topeka, Kan.

--Don't Move a Mussel: Meeting the Invasive Species Challenge--Jason Goeckler is Aquatic Nuisance Specialist for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Park, Emporia, Kan.

--Kansas Water Quality Issues--Andy Ziegler works for the U.S. Geological Survey, Lawrence, Kan.

--Balancing the Books: Kansas' Water Past, Present, and Future--David Barfield is the Chief Engineer of the Kansas Division of Water Resources, Topeka, Kan.

"The conference is unique," said Harold Klaege (e-mail hklaege@kaws.org), chair of the tradeshow committee, "as it is the only conference where all of these professional natural resource specialists in Kansas get together and discuss natural resource issues. There is no better place for your organization to display your products or services. Professionals attending the conference can learn about your products or services and then in their normal contacts with Kansas landowners and operators suggest your product or services."

Conference brochure, registration form, concurrent session topics, tradeshow exhibiting information, committee chairs, and hotel information is available at the website www.kansasnrc.org or, contact Dan Meyerhoff, at 785-625-2588 or e-mail at KNRC@kaws.org.

The sponsors of the conference are the Kansas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, Society of American Foresters, Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams, the Great Plains Society of American Foresters, Kansas Chapter of the Wildlife Society, the Kansas Section of the Society of Range Management, and Kansas Chapter Soil and Water Conservation Society.
