Ethanol fire training catching onSTERLING, Kan. (AP)--An event to teach emergency responders to fight ethanol fires is attracting more interest than organizers had anticipated. About 300 people are expected to attend the training exercise Oct. 9 at the Kansas Ethanol LLC Plant north of Sterling. Plans are to ignite at least four fires in large open burn tanks during the three-hour exercise. The exercise will determine which types of foam best extinguish ethanol fires. Jennifer Dellar, the plant's safety and purchase officer, says the exercise was originally planned for Sterling-area firefighters. But volunteer firefighters and emergency responders from 29 departments across the state will attend. She says foam vendors, insurance company representatives and representatives from a half dozen other ethanol plants around the country will also attend. The public is not invited.
