Congressman Edwards honored by agricultural economics groupTexas U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards (D-Waco) recently received a 2009 Friends of C-FARE and Agricultural Economics award at a reception in Washington. Dr. John Nichols, head of the department of agricultural economics at Texas A&M University, representing the Council on Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, presented the award. Edwards was honored in appreciation of the application of economics to policy issues involving agriculture, natural resources, food and nutrition topics. The awards reception was held in the Longworth House Office Building. Edwards graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's in economics from Texas A&M University in 1974. "Congressman Edwards has been an ardent supporter of funding for agricultural research and innovation throughout his tenure in Congress," Nichols said. "Early in his career he recognized the importance of agriculture, not only to his constituents in Central Texas, but to a nation founded on its hardworking principles." "I am proud to support American agriculture and the vital role that our farmers and ranchers play in feeding and clothing our nation," Edwards said. "It is important that U.S. economic policy ensures that our agricultural research enables our producers to remain competitive in a global market." The reception was held in conjunction with the National Association of Agricultural Economics Administrators as part of their bi-annual meeting that focuses on economic policies and funding issues of importance to researchers and producers across the country. The reception also honors the economists who provide information and guidance to the policy process, especially those who work on Capitol Hill and at the various government agencies. Agricultural economics is the study of the economic forces that affect the food, fiber and fuel industry from the producer and rural communities to the agribusiness and the consumer. Advertisement
