Goldie's Ice Cream Shoppe in Prairie City wins 7th annual IPPA Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin contest

Iowa

The Iowa Pork Producers Association Restaurant & Foodservice Committee has announced the winner of IPPA's Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin contest for 2009.

Brad Magg, along with his family, own and operate Goldie's Ice Cream Shoppe in Prairie City and will receive a check for $500, a plaque and statewide publicity.

"Wow, was my initial reaction when I first heard the news," said Magg, who has had ownership of Goldie's since March of 2007. "I couldn't believe it at first until I saw that my cousin (who works at the restaurant) had tears in her eyes. Then I started to believe."

The Magg family also operates a catering business along with the restaurant that is open seven days a week all year round. The restaurant serves an average of 350 breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches each week.

"We knew we had good tenderloins, but had no idea they were good enough to be the best in the state," said Magg. "I guess we're going to be a bit busier after this, that's for sure!"

Goldie's tenderloins are bought from the Altoona Fareway where they are cut and tenderized. Magg has his own secret breading that he uses to give his tenderloins a winning touch. Along with the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich, Goldie's has a variety of pork features on its menu. A very popular item is the "Mingo Special," which is the breaded pork tenderloin with Italian sausage and melted cheese on the top. Goldie's also offers a grilled tenderloin sandwich, a hot ham and swiss sandwich, a marinated pork loin, and a pizza burger that is made entirely of pork. Another special item is the Italian sausage sandwich. The sausage comes from Magg's father's farm and is processed at the Mingo locker in Jasper County.

TC's Point After, in DeWitt, placed second and will receive a plaque and $250 from IPPA. The Corner Station in Manning was runner-up, Tojo's Bar & Grill in Jamaica and Angle Inn in Walford received honorable mention and will each receive a plaque.

Becky Maher from Mingo nominated Goldie's Ice Cream Shoppe and will receive $100.

A total of 393 nominations were submitted for this year's contest and 42 received the required three or more nominations and became finalists. Judging by committee members was completed last month. The committee judges the pork tenderloin sandwiches on taste, physical characteristics and appearance.

"I'm so appreciative of the honor," said Magg. "We were thrilled to just even be nominated these past two years, so to find out we have the best breaded tenderloin in the state is just wonderful."

All restaurants, cafes and taverns that serve breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches can be nominated for the award each year. Previous contest winners also are eligible, but are prohibited from winning two consecutive years.
