Man accused in horse case turns self inPIERRE, S.D. (AP)--A Fort Pierre man accused of taking and mistreating a rodeo horse has turned himself in and been released after posting $5,000 bond. Twenty-two-year-old Flint Dahl is scheduled to make his first court appearance Oct. 19. Dahl is charged with felony grand theft and misdemeanor inhumane treatment of an animal. He faces up to 11 years in prison and fines of up to $22,000 if convicted. The charges arose from an investigation after Dually's owner, Wendy Halweg of Mitchell, reported the horse missing from a Stanley County Fairgrounds pen on July 5. Court documents say witnesses claim to have seen Dahl riding the horse through Fort Pierre early in the morning of July 5, and that the horse was kicking vehicles and had numerous wounds. Dually was recovered on Dahl's father's property. Halweg says the horse was released from a veterinary clinic Aug. 5 and continues to recover.
