Animal grazing behavior workshop Dec. 10 in Wray

Colorado

Why do cows eat poisonous plants, especially when there is perfectly good grass around?

Why do they lick utility poles, exposed soil, and corral panels?

Get a glimpse into what makes animals choose what to eat and where to 'hang out.' Come to the 'Animal Grazing Behavior Workshop' Dec. 10 at Wray, Colo. The workshop will be held at the Wray City Hall (Roundhouse) in Wray, Colo. The Wray City Hall is located at the intersection of 4th and Blake streets. (Two blocks east of the HWY 34 and 385 intersection, one block south on Blake St.)

Dr. Fred Provenza will present this one-day workshop. In his characteristic practical and very entertaining manner; Fred will explain how and why to use animal behavior on rangelands, high-density grazing, and feedlot situations. These same principles also apply to control wildlife damage to crop fields and hay stacks.

Variety is essential to keep animals happy. More is not necessarily better, though. How much is enough? What makes an animal select certain foods and habitats? These questions and many more will be answered during this thought-provoking and fun presentation.

The good news is that there is a nearly unlimited potential to change animal behavior. People just need to be willing to understand how surroundings affect behavior. Best of all, unlike corrals, fences, and water development, behavioral solutions cost very little to apply.

Registration, coffee and rolls will begin at 7:15 a.m. The workshop will begin at 8 a.m., and end at 5:30 p.m. Attendees will thoroughly enjoy this presentation from start to finish. Come late or leave early if you have to. Your only regret will be not hearing all of the presentation.

To register for the Animal Grazing Behavior Workshop, send your check payable to YCCD to: 247 North Clay, Wray, CO 80758. Registration is $10 if postmarked before Nov. 25 and $20 afterwards. Lunch, refreshments, and take home materials are included.

For more information about the workshop, or to receive a flier in the mail or electronically, contact Julie Elliott at 970-322-3173 ext. 3 or julie.elliott@co.usda.gov.

The Yuma County Conservation District and the Colorado Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative are sponsoring this workshop.
