Cotton rated mostly fair to good

New Mexico

During the week ending Oct. 11, there were 6.9 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, Oct. 13.

Topsoil moisture was 28 percent very short, 40 percent short 31 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus. Wind damage was 1 percent light.

Alfalfa conditions were mostly good with 93 percent of the fifth cutting complete, 44 percent of the sixth cutting completed and 12 percent of the seventh cutting completed.

Cotton conditions were mostly fair to good with 95 percent setting bolls, 72 percent bolls opening and 5 percent harvested.

Corn conditions ranged from fair to excellent with 89 percent dent, 61 percent mature and 11 percent of the grain harvested.

Irrigated sorghum conditions were mostly good with 23 percent mature. Dry sorghum conditions were mostly fair to poor with 87 percent coloring, 24 percent mature and 3 percent harvested for grain.

Irrigated winter wheat conditions were mostly good with 88 percent emerged. Dry winter wheat conditions were mostly fair with 100 percent emerged.

Peanut conditions were mostly fair with 9 percent harvested. Chile conditions ranged from fair to excellent with 98 percent of the green chile harvested, and 28 percent of the red chile harvested. Pecan conditions ranged from fair to excellent.

Cattle conditions were mostly fair. Sheep conditions ranged from poor to good. Range and pasture conditions were mostly fair to poor.
