The competition, sponsored by the Kansas Wheat Commission, honored Travis Stutzman, Sedgwick, with the first-place photo of a young boy studying a wheat plant at harvest time. For his efforts, Stutzman received $75 in cash and a purple ribbon from the KWC. Second place honors went to Kathie Corwine, Osage City; third to Sarah Heller, Tescott; fourth to Audri Burgess, McPherson and fifth, Joyce Conard, Hutchinson. View the winning entries and the rest of the more than 50 photographs entered in the competition, online at www.kansaswheat.org. Kansas Wheat Commission staff members compiled the photographs into a YouTube video, set to "Air and Simple Gifts," arranged by John Williams. The video is an effort to illustrate the beauty and importance of wheat to the state of Kansas, says Bill Spiegel, communications specialist for the Kansas Wheat Commission. "Our goal in creating a video of these photographs is to celebrate the talents of these amateur photographers," Spiegel said. "Each of more than 30 people carefully captured images during the wheat growing season that embody the spirit and determination of Kansas wheat farmers and the heritage of wheat farming for many generations of farmers." The video is on the Kansas Wheat website, www.kansaswheat.org, and click on "videos" on the lower left; or log onto www.YouTube.com, where viewers can search "2009 Kansas Wheat State Fair Photo Contest."
