Questions and answers regarding the CWRF ConAgra Ultragrain Premium Program

Q: What is the CWRF ConAgra Ultragrain Premium Program?

A: The Colorado Wheat Research Foundation (CWRF) is partnering with ConAgra Mills to create the ConAgra Mills Ultragrain Premium Program for hard white wheat. Ultragrain is a 100 percent whole wheat flour that combines the nutrition and benefits of whole grains with the finished recipe qualities of refined flour. This exciting premium program will give Colorado wheat growers a new opportunity to boost their incomes.

Growers who participate in the program will be able to gain a minimum premium of 30 cents per bushel for the 2010 crop, plus a protein premium of 2 cents per bushel for each .2 percent (1/5) greater than 12.0 percent to 15.0 percent maximum with an additional nickel per bushel at 13 percent protein (15 cents) and another nickel per bushel at 13.5 percent protein (24 cents) to a maximum of 40 cents per bushel at 15 percent protein.

Minimum premium 30 cents per bushel, plus a maximum protein premium of 40 cents per bushel = 70 cents per bushel.

Q: What hard white winter wheat varieties are eligible for the CWRF ConAgra Ultragrain Premium Program?

A: Thunder CL is the first of two varieties developed by CSU to be accepted into the program. In addition to its tolerance to Beyond herbicide for control of winter annual grasses like feral rye, downy brome, jointed goatgrass and cheatgrass, the CSU Uniform Variety Trials have shown Thunder CL to have:

--Excellent straw strength and top irrigated yields.

--Dryland yield comparable to popular Clearfield varieties Above and Bond CL.

--Good stress tolerance, high performance in tough weather conditions.

--Stripe and stem rust resistance, good wheat streak mosaic virus tolerance.

--Sprout tolerance better than Platte, less than Danby and Trego.

--Exceptional milling and baking qualities.

ConAgra will accept up to 50,000 acres of Thunder CL for planting in the fall of 2009. Approximately 23,000 bushels of certified seed will be available from CWRF seed grower participants in the Thunder CL program and from CWRF.

Q: What are the requirements of the program?

A: Wheat producers who wish to participate in the Thunder CL program will need to sign a Clearfield Wheat Stewardship Grower Agreement with BASF; a Grain Pricing Schedule with ConAgra Grain Processing Company detailing the contract terms; and a Wheat Seed Agreement with CWRF that requires planting of certified seed and the delivery of all production to ConAgra.

Q: In general, what are the contract terms?

A: The Grain Pricing Schedule with ConAgra Grain Processing Company includes pricing (grower premium of 30 cents per bushel), price base (#1 HRW ordinary bid price basis the delivery point), contracting period (Aug. 1 to Nov. 30, 2009)--all grain must be delivered to designated delivery point when called by delivery point or by May 31, 2011, and all grain must be sold to delivery point no later than May 31, 2011), protein scale (2 cents per bushel for each .2 percent (1/5) greater than 12.0 percent to 15.0 percent maximum with an additional nickel per bushel at 13 percent protein (15 cents) and another nickel per bushel at 13.5 percent protein (24 cents) to a maximum of 40 cents per bushel at 15 percent protein), delivery points, quality discounts (test weight, moisture, total defects, dockage, shrunken and broken, foreign material, IDK and damage), contrasting classes over 2.0 percent subject to forfeiture of all Thunder CL premiums and wheat must be identity preserved.

Q: What will be the cost of the certified seed?

A: The price of certified seed of Thunder CL should be similar to the price for other CWRF Clearfield varieties Above and Bond CL.

Q: Where can I buy the certified seed?

A: Certified seed in the fall of 2009 can be picked up at either the Bruce Corman storage located six miles south of Burlington, Colo. on Highway 385 to County Road N or the Dry Creek Seed Company plant located at 31480 County Road 3G southeast of Genoa, Colo. Please call Randy Wilkes at 970-340-7314 or 970-346-7314 to purchase seed from the Burlington location and Ross Hansen at 719-763-2367 to purchase seed from the Genoa location. For the Haxtun, Colo. area, call Steve Edwards of Grainland Cooperative at 970-466-1952.

Q: Can I save seed and replant it?

A: No. Thunder CL carries the novel herbicide tolerance trait owned by BASF and growers must also sign a Clearfield Wheat Stewardship Grower Agreement with BASF that specifies that the grower is not to save seed for replanting or to supply to anyone for replanting. Also, ConAgra has a requirement that certified seed must be used to produce wheat under contract with them to receive the grower and protein premium in their Grain Pricing Schedule. The purpose of the certified seed requirement by ConAgra is to preserve the purity and integrity of the variety and its milling and baking qualities. The Wheat Seed Agreement with CWRF requires planting of certified seed of Thunder CL for the production of grain to sell under the Grain Pricing Schedule established by ConAgra.

Q: What are the delivery points?

ConAgra, in collaboration with CWRF, has established country elevator delivery points. The following delivery points have been established in Colorado:

Commerce City: ConAgra

Bennett: Roggen Farmers Elevator Association

Anton: Anton Co-op

Haxtun: Grainland Co-op

Flagler: Flagler Co-op

Vona: Tempel Grain

Burlington: Corman Storage

Source: Colorado Wheat.
