Below average temperatures, precip seen across state

Colorado

Precipitation and temperatures across Colorado were below average during the week ending Oct. 11, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, Oct. 13.

Reports of snow and overnight freezing temperatures continue to shorten the growing season in some areas. These conditions allowed producers 5.2 days in the field.

Spring wheat was reported at 97 percent harvested, slightly behind the 5-year average. The winter wheat crop progressed to 90 percent seeded and 64 percent emerged by the end of the week, 11 percentage points behind the 5-year average.

Late season crops continue to be rated in good condition. Sorghum, which continues to progress ahead of the average, was 21 percent harvested by the end of the week. Corn was 28 percent harvested this week, 3 percentage points above the average. Sunflowers, reported at 30 percent harvested, are 7 points behind their 5-year average. Dry beans were 69 percent harvested, 5 percentage points behind the average, while summer potatoes were 3 percentage points ahead of the usual harvest progress.

Conditions for pasture and range across Colorado remained in good condition for the week. The alfalfa crop ended the week in mostly good condition with fourth cutting alfalfa, at 28 percent complete, lagging behind the 5-year average by 15 percentage points.

Livestock in Colorado are rated in good condition again this week. Death losses for cattle were rated average, while sheep were rated just below average. Stored feed supplies remained above average for this time of the year.
