Butler to dedicate refurbished agriculture facilities Oct. 19

Kansas

On Oct. 19 Butler Community College will welcome Acting Secretary of the Kansas Department of Agriculture Josh Svaty as the college celebrates the completion of its updated agriculture facilities. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and to tour the renovated building.

With a nationally acclaimed Livestock Judging Team, the nearly $1.2 million renovations are providing current and future ag students with a new barn and storage space, additional classrooms space, student gathering space with wireless internet technology, new furnishings and state-of-the-art technology.

"The addition of classrooms, learning laboratory/flex space, and cutting-edge technology is a very valuable resource in providing the ideal setting where students can learn skills and abilities that fit their agriculture educational goals and instructors can deliver opportunities in the Butler agriculture programs in a comfortable and safe environment," said Don Gronau, lead agriculture instructor.

Coupled with a no-interest loan allocated by the Kansas Board of Regents, the Butler Foundation took the lead on securing funds to make the changes possible.

Appointed by Governor Mark Parkinson in July 2009, Secretary Svaty will be on hand to commemorate the conclusion of the construction and grand opening of the new facilities. Svaty will speak at the facility 4:30 p.m.

"Agriculture as we know it is undergoing vast change. This challenge begins with education, and Butler's significant investment in this beautiful facility demonstrates that it is committed to playing a key role in that education," Svaty said. "Tomorrow's ag producers and employers will demand a smarter, more resilient workforce."

Ag students from across the country look to Butler as the college of choice when preparing for careers in agriculture. Butler offers programs of study in Agribusiness, Agriculture, Livestock Management and Merchandising, Farm and Ranch Management and Pre-Veterinarian.

Tours will be available from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Oct. 19. The formal program begins at 4:30 p.m. To reach the facility, continue south past the main Butler campus on Haverhill Rd. Turn west at the intersection of Haverhill and Kechi Rd. (20th), just west of the refinery, and continue to the facility on the south side of the road.

Giving opportunities are still available. Contact Butler's Foundation office for more information at 316-320-7312. A gift to Butler Community College may earn a tax credit up to 54 percent.
