Wyobraska cattle sales report

The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska, western North and South Dakota feedlots for the week ending Oct. 10, totaled 6,200 head, compared to 10,250 head last week and 11,000 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week at Wyoming auctions, feeder steers under 600 pounds sold generally steady, and some instances were $2 to $5 lower in Riverton. Heifers under 500 pounds sold steady, with instances of $1 to $3 lower in Riverton, and instances of $1 to $2 higher at Torrington. Steers over 600 pounds were steady to $2 lower, heifers over 500 pounds were steady to $2 lower, except at Riverton where they were $2 higher. Demand was moderate to good. Direct trade was very slow. There were not enough sales reported for a price comparison. Demand was light to moderate. Buyer inquiry was light to moderate for moderate to heavy offerings. Producers were reluctant to sell cattle at current prices. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent, and with a 5 to 10 cent slide on calves and 3 to 6 cent slide on yearlings from base weight. Steers made up approximately 58% of the total receipts, heifers 42%, with 65% over 600 pounds. Direct sales accounted for 500 head of the total receipts.
