State Fair attendance up again

HURON, S.D. (AP)--Attendance at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron rose for the third straight year.

Officials say the number of fairgoers was up 4 percent to more than 162,000.

Other areas also showed growth. Livestock entries, commercial vendors, campers and carnival sales all were up. Revenue from fairgrounds campsites was up 19 percent.

The latest figures available show the five-day fair raised just over $97,000 in total tax revenues, up from the previous year's $86,000. Part of the higher total is attributed to an increase in South Dakota's tourism tax, which was raised to 1.5 percent on July 1.

Gross sales totaled $1.2 million, up from 2008's $1.1 million.

Fair Manager Jerome Hertel says next year's fair will be a milestone--the 125th.
