South Dakota lifts Montana cattle restrictions

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP)--A South Dakota order imposed about a year ago that required Montana cattle imports to test negative for brucellosis is being dropped.

Several states imposed import restrictions when Montana's second case of the livestock disease was diagnosed near Yellowstone National Park in May 2008. Federal officials this past July declared Montana once again free of the disease and lifted export restrictions.

South Dakota State Veterinarian Dustin Oedekoven says the state's import order was lifted Sept. 17.

Earlier this month, North Dakota's Board of Animal Health issued an order recognizing Montana's brucellosis-free status except for cattle and bison from seven counties near Yellowstone.
