Gates, Vilsack eulogize Borlaug at memorial

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP)--Colleagues of Norman Borlaug memorialized the Nobel Peace Prize winner as a great hunger fighter.

About 1,000 attended a memorial Oct. 6 at Texas A&M University for the teacher and scientist.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates was university president during the scientist's tenure. He and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack eulogized Borlaug at the service.

Gates recalled Borlaug as a man who "built armies of agricultural workers'' to combat hunger in the world's developing countries.

In 1970, Borlaug received the only Nobel Peace Prize ever given for agriculture. He died Sept. 12.
