Alfalfa harvest wrapping up fifth cutting

New Mexico

There were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Oct. 4, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, Oct. 5.

Topsoil moisture was 28 percent very short, 40 percent short and 32 percent adequate. Wind damage was 18 percent light, 10 percent adequate and 2 percent severe.

Alfalfa conditions were mostly good with 91 percent of the fifth cutting complete, 43 percent of the sixth cutting completed and 5 percent of the seventh cutting completed. Cotton conditions ranged from fair to excellent with 93 percent setting bolls, 59 percent bolls opening and 2 percent harvested. Corn conditions were mostly good with 79 percent dent, 49 percent mature and 9 percent of the grain harvested. Irrigated sorghum conditions were mostly good with 100 percent coloring and 15 percent mature. Dry sorghum conditions were mostly poor with 85 percent coloring and 14 percent mature. Irrigated winter wheat was 98 percent planted and 84 percent emerged. Dry winter wheat was 100 percent planted and 100 percent emerged. Peanut conditions were mostly fair with 100 percent pegging.

Chile conditions were mostly fair with 17 percent light pod set, 56 percent average pod set, 27 percent heavy pod set, 93 percent of the green chile harvested, and 26 percent of the red chile harvested. Pecan conditions ranged from fair to excellent with 7 percent light nut set, 50 percent average nut set and 43 percent heavy nut set. Cattle conditions were mostly fair. Sheep conditions were mostly poor to fair. Range and pasture conditions were mostly fair to poor.
