Young livestock exhibitors rewarded with auction premiums, scholarshipsKansas Youth from across the state came to Wichita to compete for auction premiums and scholarships during the 77th Kansas Junior Livestock Show, Sept. 25 to 28. The largest youth livestock show in Kansas featured 744 4-H and FFA members from 83 counties exhibiting 1,268 head of livestock. Major sponsors of the show are the Kansas Livestock Association, Kansas State University and the Agri-Business Council of Wichita. A 1,350 lb. Charolais shown by Taylor Crumbaker from Beloit bested a field of 120 head to earn grand champion steer honors. Crumbaker's steer was purchased by Carlos O'Kelly's Mexican Café and Cargill Meat Solutions for $12,140 during the Auction of Champions held at the show's conclusion. The reserve grand champion steer, exhibited by Shilo Schaake, was a 1,285 lb. crossbred worth $10,455 to Xtra Factor, Bill Barr & Co., Watercress Development, Life Products, Frederick Sales, MicroBeef, Coby Tresner, Westway, Vi-Cor, Qualitech, The Hartford Co. and State Farm Insurance/Jim Maddox. The reserve Charolais steer was exhibited by Kyra Skinner of Liberal. Chase Ratliff of Westphalia showed the reserve champion crossbred steer. Sarah Pelton, Paradise, led the champion Angus steer, while the reserve was owned by Garrett Kays, Weir. A steer exhibited by Garrett Ochs, Jetmore, earned the champion Chianina title, while Madylien Kay Voboril, Overland Park, showed the reserve. The champion Hereford steer belonged to Stetson Junek of Cuba. The reserve Hereford was led by Charlsie Craig, Scandia. Cody Hrabe from Stockton owned the champion Maine-Anjou steer, while Madison Ratliff from Westphalia showed the reserve. The champion Shorthorn steer was led by Taylor Nikkel of Maple Hill, and the reserve was an entry exhibited by Haley Lauer of Abilene. Ryan Goetzmann from Gardner exhibited the champion Simmental steer, with Jarrod Beam from Beloit leading the reserve. Brooke Jensen of Courtland showed the all-other-breeds champion. Cheyanne Ratliff, Westphalia, owned the reserve AOB steer. For the second year in a row, Chase Ratliff, 11, of Westphalia, exhibited the supreme champion heifer. This year's winning entry was from the AOB division. A Chianina shown by Ashley Olivier from Harper was the reserve supreme champion heifer of the 281-head show. The reserve champion AOB heifer was led by Ashlee Corns of Eureka. Ashlynn Schlochtermeier from Russell exhibited the reserve Chianina female. The champion Angus heifer was shown by Cody Theis, Leavenworth. Grady Dickerson, Paradise, exhibited the reserve Angus. A heifer owned by Kendal Clawson of Satanta topped the Charolais division. Reserve Charolais heifer honors were awarded to an entry shown by Calvin Dix from Woodston. The champion Gelbvieh heifer was exhibited by Grace Hammer of Wallace. Callahan Grund, Wallace, led the reserve Gelbvieh. In the Hereford division, champion honors went to a heifer owned by Brady Jensen, Courtland, with reserve going to an entry from Kati Fehlman of Junction City. Maycee Ratliff from Westphalia showed the champion Limousin heifer, with her sister, Madison, leading the reserve. Lauren Prill, Wichita, exhibited the champion Maine-Anjou heifer. The reserve Maine-Anjou heifer was shown by Madison Vaught, McClouth. The champion MaineTainer heifer was owned by Chance Draper of Ford, with reserve going to an entry from Trevor Lowell of Agenda. Payton Harms from Lincolnville owned the champion Red Angus heifer. His sister, Taylor, led the reserve. A heifer exhibited by Faye Smith of Walton was named champion Shorthorn, while Cody Webb of Pomona showed the reserve. Addi Marston of Canton led the champion ShorthornPlus female, with Lindsay Bulk of Riley owning the reserve. Reagan Schlochtermeier, Russell, showed the champion Simmental heifer. Lauren Prill, Wichita, exhibited the reserve. The champion commercial heifer was awarded to an entry from Hannah Talkington, Hays. Casey Craver, Gypsum, led the reserve commercial heifer. Champion cattle showman in the senior division was AnnHeidi Reed of Winfield, with Casey Craver of Gypsum earning top junior cattle showmanship honors. Senior division winners following Reed, in order of finish, were: Shelby Leonhard, Oskaloosa; Becky Gleason, Maple Hill; Kendal Clawson, Satanta; and Jarrod Beam, Beloit. Rounding out the top five in the junior division were: Hannah Talkington, Hays; Tanner Walden, Tonganoxie; Taylor Nikkel, Maple Hill; and Grady Dickerson, Paradise. Fourteen-year-old Taten Schlochtermeier of Russell guided his 280 lb. crossbred to the grand champion KJLS market hog title. Cargill Meat Solutions paid $1,692 for Schlochtermeier's entry during the premium sale. A 280 lb. crossbred owned by Quinton Wuthnow, Manchester, was the reserve grand champion market hog of the 271-head show. D & C Enterprises placed a final bid of $2,294 on Wuthnow's hog. The champion Duroc title went to an entry exhibited by Caitlyn Carnahan of Mound Valley. Grant Simpson, Columbus, owned the reserve champion Duroc. Quinton Ford of Parker guided the champion Hampshire. Showing the reserve was Brett Goetzmann of Gardner. In the Spotted barrow division, Quinton Wuthnow from Manchester exhibited the champion. Kaitlin Newberry from Attica owned the reserve Spotted barrow. Trace Davis, Rossville, showed the champion Yorkshire hog, while the reserve champion was exhibited by Austin Thompson, Hutchinson. The AOB title was awarded to an entry shown by Tessa Beeman of Olpe. Rebekah Thomas of Chapman owned the reserve AOB hog. Lauren James of Council Grove was named champion senior hog showman, while Blake Holmes of Lebo claimed the champion junior title. Senior division winners following James, in order of finish, were: Quinton Wuthnow, Manchester; Austin Holmes, Lebo; Elizabeth Koch, Abilene; and Blaine McDougal, Leavenworth. Rounding out the junior division, in order of finish, were: Shelby Holmes, Lebo; Randal Long, Garden City; Caitlin Dreher, Iola; and Andrew Anderson, Caney. Taylor Harrison from Spring Hill exhibited the grand champion market lamb, a 139 lb. crossbred that brought $4,177 during the Auction of Champions. Southwestern Remodeling of Wichita was the buyer. The reserve grand champion market lamb, a 147 lb. Hampshire worth $2,169 to State Farm Insurance/Jim Maddox and Kansas Feeds, was shown by Kylie Naber of Osborne. A total of 258 lambs was shown at KJLS. Boone Ott of Coffeyville led the reserve champion crossbred. Russell's Gage Nichols showed the reserve Hampshire lamb. An entry owned by Allison Smith, Emporia, earned champion honors in the Dorset division. Reserve was owned by Matthew Rezac of Onaga. Kylie Naber of Osborne showed the champion natural colored lamb, with the reserve shown by Boone Ott from Coffeyville. The champion speckled lamb was exhibited by Sage Collins of Chanute. Rochelle McGhee of Westphalia led the reserve. Garrett Kays from Weir owned the champion Suffolk, with Gage Nichols of Russell showing the reserve. The champion AOB lamb was shown by Monica Ebert of St. George. Jenna Dennis from Bucyrus exhibited the reserve AOB lamb. Jansyn Van Horn of Garfield owned the top two entries in the 35-head purebred ewe show. The supreme champion was selected from the Montadale division, with reserve coming from the Hampshire class. Reserve champion in the Montadale division was exhibited by Katie Schrag from Haven. Holly Swearingen, Lawrence, owned the reserve Hampshire. Allison Smith, Emporia, showed the champion Dorset ewe. Reserve Dorset went to a ewe owned by Taylor Harrison of Spring Hill. Monica Ebert of St. George owned the champion Shropshire, with reserve being led by Dakotah McBride from Hooker, Okla. A ewe exhibited by Kelli Holtaus of Tribune took top honors in the Suffolk division. The champion Southdown was owned by Tenise Wedel, Moundridge, while the reserve belonged to Taylor Coen of Elkhart. The grand champion commercial ewe, selected from a field of 146 entries, was exhibited by Taylor Stanley from Baldwin. Alyssa Heitschmidt of Garden City owned the reserve grand commercial ewe. Lance Davis, Yates Center, led the champion yearling commercial ewe. The reserve was shown by Colby Jackson, Wamego. Boone Ott from Coffeyville won the senior division of the sheep showmanship contest, while Jansyn Van Horn of Garfield claimed champion junior sheep showman honors. Following Ott, in order of finish, were: Chastin Leggett, Columbus; Monica Ebert, St. George; Lindsey Pease, Chetopa; and Lauren Hoge, Linwood. Exhibitors placing second through fifth in the junior division were: Taylor Coen, Elkhart; Kaylee Houston, Bartlett; Spencer Dennis, Bucyrus; and Chantelle Scott, Ransom. Eleven-year-old Mattie Shafer from Rozel received grand champion honors with her meat goat. The champion goat, besting 157 others to claim the top prize, weighed 94 lbs. and was worth $2,709 to S.O.W. Corporation. Lindsey Pease, from Chetopa, led the reserve, which weighed 104 lbs. Elanco, Agritek and Ted Crist placed a final bid of $1,040 on Pease's goat.
