K-State students earn Cargill Graduate Fellowships in Meat Science

Kansas

Two Kansas State University graduate students in the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry have been named Cargill Graduate Fellows in Meat Science.

Melissa Daniel, a Meat Science Ph.D. student from Cypress Inn, Tenn., earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin, Tenn., and a master's degree from K-State. This summer, Daniel was one of more than 60 Ph.D. students from around the world who participated in a short course at the International Congress of Meat Science and Technology in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is working on her dissertation under the direction of Dr. Michael Dikeman.

Bryce Gerlach is from Wilber, Neb. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is working toward a master's degree in Meat Science at K-State under Dr. Terry Houser. Bryce is currently an assistant coach for the K-State Meat Judging team and is working on technologies to decrease abscesses in pork carcasses.

As Cargill Fellows, Daniel and Gerlach earn a stipend enhancement and have the opportunity to collaborate and exchange ideas with Cargill through seminars, research and plant visits.

"The Fellows program is important to us at Cargill because it's all about bringing along the next generation of research and innovation that are critical to the success of the meat industry," said Ann Brackenridge, a director of research and development for Cargill in Wichita. "We also like to work with external resources, such as Kansas State, to help provide additional perspective on how to shape the industry for the future."

Cargill is an international food company with 159,000 employees in 68 countries. The Cargill Graduate Fellowship in Meat Science is the result of collaboration between Cargill's Animal Protein businesses and K-State's meats faculty. The goal is to provide students exposure to the meat industry, and to further Cargill's commitment to continuing education.

More information about Cargill Fellowships in Meat Science is available from K-State's Meat Science faculty at 785-532-6131.
