Joplin regional cattle sales reportThe Joplin Regional Stockyards, Joplin, Mo., reported receipts of 3,900 head Oct. 5, compared to 3,748 head last week and 2,779 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, steer calves and yearlings traded $2 to $3 lower. Heifer calves and yearlings sold were $3 to $5 lower. Fleshy and/or unweaned calves became increasingly difficult to market throughout the day at a time of year when buyers grow increasingly selective for weaned and vaccinated cattle. Cattlemen are in the business of managing risk and the best way to do that, at this stage in the game, is to buy the cattle that have the best chance to thrive. A tough market day all the way around with corn taking a fair jump and cattle contracts opening the week lower. The supply moderate and demand light to moderate at best. The feeder supply consisted of 42% steers, 46% heifers, and 11% bulls; 44% of all the feeders weighed over 600 pounds.
