Wyobraska cattle sales report

The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska, and western North and South Dakota feedlots for the week ending October. 3, totaled 10,250 head, compared to 6,125 head last week and 4,000 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week at Wyoming auctions, feeder steers and heifers under 700 pounds sold steady, instances were $1 to $5 lower in Riverton, steers over 700 pounds generally steady, heifers steady to $2 lower. Demand was moderate to good. Direct trade is slow. Compared to last week steers over 800 pounds sold steady, under 600 pounds were $3 to $5 lower, no comparable heifers sales reported. Demand was moderate. Buyer inquiry was light to moderate for moderate to heavy offerings. Some cattle came off grass early due to grasshoppers eating up the pastures. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent, and with a 5 to 10 cent slide on calves and 3 to 6 cent slide on yearlings from base weight. Steers made up approximately 59% of the total receipts, heifers 41%, with 73% over 600 lbs., totaled 73%. Direct sales accounted for 4350 head of the total receipts.
