Banner year for water resource projects in Kansas

Kansas

Water resource accomplishments of 2009 and plans for future projects will be highlighted at the Nov. 17 and 18 meeting of the Kansas Water Authority in Liberal, Kan. The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m., Nov. 17 in Room SW 229C/D at Seward County Community College, 1802 N. Kansas Ave., Liberal, Kan. The meeting begins at 10 a.m., Nov. 18 at the same location.

"This year has been an exceptional one for water resource projects in Kansas," says Steve Irsik of Ingalls, chairman of the Kansas Water Authority. "We've witnessed the completion of HorseThief Reservoir near Jetmore; the start of the pilot dredging project at Mission Lake at Horton; and the continuation of the nationally recognized Wichita aquifer storage and recovery project."

Each year, the Authority prepares an annual report to the Governor and Kansas Legislature highlighting accomplishments and plans for the future. All of these projects are highlighted in the "2010 Annual Report to the Governor and Legislature." The report will be reviewed by the members of the Kansas Water Authority.

At each Authority meeting, emphasis is placed on an issue of importance in the river basin where the meeting is being held. The Cimarron River basin activity to be featured will be bioenergy developments. Dr. Tom Robb of Abengoa Bioenergy Corporation of Liberal will speak to the Authority.

The third volume of the Reservoir Roadmap, an action plan to secure, protect and restore the water storage capacity of all of the state's federal reservoirs, will be presented to Authority members. In the third volume, the principles that apply to all of the state's reservoirs will be directed to John Redmond which has been identified as a pilot reservoir. Once approved by the Kansas Water Authority, the Roadmap will be presented to the Kansas House of Representatives Vision 2020 Committee in the 2010 Kansas legislative session. The Roadmap is posted on the Water Office website.

The 24-member Kansas Water Authority and the Kansas Water Office work in concert to advise the Governor and the Kansas Legislature on water resource policy. Authority members include citizens who represent the state's diverse water resource interests and officials with the state's water resource agencies.

Complete meeting information will be posted on the Kansas Water Office web page at www.kwo.org. Interested parties without web access may call the Kansas Water Office at 785-296-3185 or toll free at (888) KAN-WATER (526-9283).
