Snow storm halts harvest

Wyoming

A snow storm and cooler temperatures were seen during the week ending Nov. 1 according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Wyoming Field Office, Nov. 2.

Wyoming experienced a snow storm last week. The snow was wet which helped with ground moisture. Harvest was halted due to the snow. Livestock was fairing well and were back off the rangeland pastures. High temperatures ranged from mid 40s to high 60s. Low temperatures ranged from 2 below to 25 above. Topsoil moisture was at 90 percent adequate or better, up 18 points from last year and up 33 points from the average.

There were 3.3 days suitable for field work last week. Ninety-two percent of the dry beans had been combined; 6 points above 2008 but unchanged from the 5-year average. Ninety-four percent of corn was mature, and 13 percent was harvested; up 7 points from last year but 22 points below the average. Harvested sugar beets were reported at 66 percent, 5 point below 2008 and 13 points below the average. Nine-tenths of alfalfa has been cut for the third time, up 19 points from last year but 1 point below the average.

Range and pasture conditions were at 47 percent good or better, down 2 points from the previous week. Hay and roughage supplies were at 95 percent adequate or better, 2 points up from last year and up 16 points from the average.
