Alfalfa conditions remain mostly good

New Mexico

There were 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Nov. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, Nov. 2.

Topsoil moisture was 19 percent very short, 39 percent short and 42 percent adequate. Wind damage was 11 percent light and 4 percent moderate with 2 percent of sorghum crops and 2 percent of corn crops damaged by wind. Freeze damage was 19 percent light, 34 percent moderate, 11 percent severe with 10 percent of winter wheat crops damaged by freeze.

Alfalfa conditions were mostly good with 90 percent of the sixth cutting completed and 60 percent of the seventh cutting completed. Cotton conditions ranged from fair to excellent with 97 percent bolls opening and 36 percent harvested. Corn conditions were mostly good with 98 percent dent, 95 percent mature and 58 percent of the grain harvested. Irrigated sorghum conditions ranged from poor to excellent with 90 percent mature and 30 percent harvested for grain. Dry sorghum conditions were mostly very poor to poor with 68 percent mature and 17 percent harvested for grain. Irrigated winter wheat conditions ranged from fair to excellent with 94 percent emerged. Dry winter wheat conditions were mostly fair.
