Gills honored as 2009 Pioneer Breeder of the Year

South Dakota

Larry and Janet Gill and family, Gill Red Angus, of Timber Lake, S.D., were honored at the National Red Angus Convention in Mahnomen, Minn., Sept. 16 to 19. Chad Pederson, Firesteel, S.D., neighbor and fellow Red Angus breeder, presented Gills with the award.

Gills purchased their first Red Angus cattle from the Enid School Dispersion in Oklahoma in 1979. They also purchased cattle in Wyoming and Montana for their initial herd investment.

Over the past 30 years, Gill Red Angus grew and became established as a reputable seedstock source. As the number of registered Red Angus expanded, Gills began phasing out their commercial operation allowing them more time to focus on raising quality bulls and elite females. Their program is backed by sound cattle selection and strict culling practices.

"Gills' dedication to customer service and tireless promotion of Red Angus cattle set the bar high for fellow Red Angus breeders," said Pederson. Gills strive to be on the seats when their customers' calves sell, buying for themselves and other feeders. They are confident Gill-sired calves perform well in the feedlot and on the rail and have their customers' data to back it up.
