14th annual "Battle of the Salsas" winners announced at State Fair

New Mexico

New Mexico Department of Agriculture and the New Mexico Chile Commission, sponsors of the 14th "Battle of the Salsas" at the New Mexico State Fair, announce Cindy's Yummy and Healthy Salsa (Hot) of Albuquerque, as this year's first place winner. Fair-goers had the opportunity to sample and cast their votes among 37 salsas processed in New Mexico.

"The Battle of the Salsas" provides a great venue to showcase and promote the many New Mexico salsas. "The competition gives food processors direct input from the public," said Dr. I Miley Gonzalez, New Mexico secretary of agriculture.

Cindy's Yummy and Healthy Salsa (Hot) is a new production and is now available in Albuquerque Co-ops.

Chilitos Salsa, second place winner is an old-time recipe from the Robert Perez family and has been served for years in one of the leading Mexican food restaurants in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Chilitos Salsa is available in stores throughout the state.

Third place this year went to Los Cuates Salsa, a product of long-established, locally owned and family operated Spanish restaurant, Los Cuates. This red chile salsa, with a unique flavor, also took third place last year.

Chile is the eighth ranked agricultural commodity in the state. Chile producers harvested over 3,000 acres, resulting in over 20,000 pounds of chile in 2008. New Mexico is ranked No. 1 in the nation for chile production.
