AdvertisementJoanne Lupton elected to Institute of MedicineTexas Dr. Joanne Lupton, distinguished professor of nutrition and food science in Texas A&M University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, has been named a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine. "Election to the (institute) is considered to be one of the highest honors in fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service," according to the institute's announcement. Lupton was one of 65 new members and five foreign associates elected this year. Founded in 1970, the Institute of Medicine has to date honored 1,778 individuals with membership. It has become recognized as a national resource for independent, scientifically informed analysis and recommendations on health issues. "It is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished and accomplished individuals," said the institute's president Harvey V. Fineberg. "Each of these new members stands out as a professional whose research, knowledge and skills have significantly advanced health and medicine and who has served as a model for others. The Institute of Medicine is greatly enriched by the addition of our newly elected colleagues." Lupton earned her bachelor's degree in philosophy from Mount Holyoke College, her master's degree in food and nutrition from California State University and her doctorate in nutrition from the University of California, Davis. She is a widely-published researcher focusing on the effect of diet on colon physiology and colon cancer with a particular emphasis on dietary fiber and n-3 fatty acids known as the "healthy fats." She has been recognized with numerous academic honors at Texas A&M including University Fellow, Regents Professor and the William W. Allen Endowed Chair in Nutrition. "I am delighted that Dr. Joanne Lupton has been elected," said Dr. Jimmy Keeton, nutrition and food science department chair. "This is a very prestigious honor and certainly brings recognition to Dr. Lupton, the department, college and university." Lupton is one of four Texans to be honored this year. Others elected into the Institute include Roberta Ness, University of Texas, Houston; Daniel Podolsky, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas; and William Sage, University of Texas, Austin.
