Wyobraska cattle sales report

The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska, western North and South Dakota feedlots for the week ending Oct. 31, totaled 10,300 head, compared to 12,450 head last week and 13,975 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold uneven at Torrington and Riverton auctions. Steers calves sold generally steady to $6 higher, instances were $7 higher, and heifer calves sold generally steady to $5 higher, instances were $6 to $7 higher. Steer calves sold steady to $2 lower, heifer calves steady to $3 lower, and the yearling steers and heifers were steady to $1.50 lower at Torrington auctions. Quality was not as attractive and the receipts were lighter due to the slow moving winter storm in the area. Demand was moderate to excellent especially for light weight calves. Direct trade was slow. Compared to last week feeder steers sold steady, heifers were $2 higher on few comparable weights. Demand was light. The region received moderate to heavy snow slowing livestock movement. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent, and with a 5 to 10 cent slide on calves and 3 to 6 cent slide on yearlings from base weight. Steers made up approximately 55% of the total receipts, heifers 45%, with 20% over 600 pounds. Direct sales accounted for 1360 head of the total receipts.
