2010 Beef Cattle Short Course in San Antonio to cover meaty topicsTexas Room 109 of the Performing Arts Building of Palo Alto College, 1400 West Villaret, will serve as the site for the 2010 South Texas Beef Cattle Short Course. The free program wll be presented by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and Bexar Beef Cattle Committee, said Jerry Warren, AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture in Bexar County. Short course sessions will be from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., on three consecutive Thursday evenings--Jan. 7, Jan. 14 and Jan. 21. Registration will take place from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., on each of those evenings. "People are welcome to attend any or all of these sessions," Warren said. "Sessions are designed to present the cattle producer or others involved in the beef cattle industry a comprehensive overview of current issues on producing and maintaining beef cattle." Jan. 7 presentations will be "Restocking Your Herd After a Drought" and "Getting 'Em Ready at the Ranch," both presented by Dr. Rick Machen, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist in Uvalde. The first session on Jan. 14 will be "Overview of Where the Cattle Industry is Headed and How Should We Sell Our Cattle--Sale Barn or Internet?" presented by Homero Recio, president of Agri-West International Inc., San Antonio. The second presentation, "Legal Issues Affecting Landowners," will be given by Dr. Charles E. Gilliland, Helen and O.N. Mitchell Fellow of Real Estate research economist, Real Estate Center, Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. Jan. 21 sessions will be "Overgrazed Pastures--What Can We Do About It?" by Dr. Bob Lyons, AgriLife Extension range specialist in Uvalde; and "Wildlife Management: Managing Cattle and Wildlife in One System," by Dr. Jim Gallagher, AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist in Uvalde. All sessions are sponsored by Palo Alto College and the Texas/Mexico Border Coalition. Additional individual session sponsors include Purina Mills, Novartis and Rangeland Management. Two continuing education units will be offered for attending both of each evening's sessions.
