Powell, Worland ranching workshops focus on keys to sustainability

Wyoming

Sustainable ranching workshops focusing on profit, production, enjoyment and family are in Powell and Worland in November.

The workshop topics have been found to be keys to ranching sustainability, said Dallas Mount, University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service educator in Platte County, specializing in livestock production systems.

The Powell session is Nov. 16, in the multi-purpose room at the Park County Fairgrounds, and the Worland class is Nov. 17, in the multi-purpose room at the Washakie County Fairgrounds. Both are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A $10 fee covers materials and lunch. RSVP is requested by noon Nov. 13 by calling Cami Smith in the Hot Springs UW CES office at 307-864-3421.

The sessions were developed from components of the High Plains Ranch Practicum School, a program of UW CES in southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska. Mount and Aaron Berger, University of Nebraska Extension-Lincoln educator, direct the practicum. They are also instructors for the workshop.

"Ranchers who have participated in the full ranch practicum course reported significant improvements in ranch profitability and knowledge gained from the course," said Mount.

Key concepts are:

--Ranch financials: how to determine your unit cost of production and compare against regional benchmarks

--Integrating nutrition, body condition scoring and reproductive performance

--Grazing systems: Developing an applied grazing system and simple methods for monitoring rangeland systems

--Strategic planning: Working on the ranch business and with the people involved in it

Participants are asked to prepare for the sessions by reading the pre-materials or viewing the video presentations at http://HPRanchPracticum.com or hard copies and DVDs, which are available from a local UW CES office. Material will not be reviewed at the workshops; the concepts will be discussed and applied at the workshops.

For more information, contact Smith or Barton Stam, UW CES educator in Hot Springs County, at 307-864-3421 or 307-864-5283, or by e-mail at brstam@uwyo.edu.
