Animal welfare group protests at Canadian Finals Rodeo

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP)--An animal welfare organization is protesting outside the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton.

The director of the Voice of Animals Humane Society says her group is particularly concerned about calf-roping at the recent competition. Director Tove Reece says many calves die or are so badly injured they have to be destroyed.

But the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association says not a single calf has died at the Edmonton rodeo since 2008. Animal safety coordinator Ralph Murray questions where the Voice of Animals is getting its information.

The Edmonton Humane Society says while it doesn't support the use of animals for entertainment, it is ensuring that those taking part in the rodeo are not suffering.

As George Bernard Shaw said about vivisectors (animal researchers): "Anyone who wouldn't hesitate to vivisect wouldn't hesitate to lie about it."

Three roping calves suffered broken legs at this year's California Rodeo/Salinas, and had to be destroyed. I was there in 1995 when FIVE animals were killed in a single weekend. Tip of the iceberg. Not coincidentally, that was when the PRCA finally began requiring on-site veterinarians at all their events. Most don't. Rodeo is a macho anachronism which belongs in the dustbin of history. For most of the animals, rodeo is merely a detour en route to the slaughterhouse. Some "sport"!
