Favorable harvest weather

Minnesota

Above normal temperatures and little precipitation allowed producers 5.6 days suitable to continue this fall's harvest and tillage activities during the week ending Nov. 15, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Minnesota Field Office, Nov. 16.

Producers harvested another 15 percent of the soybean crop bringing statewide progress to 92 percent complete. Thirty-six percent of the state's soybean acres have been harvested since Nov. 1, statewide, average moisture of soybeans being harvested was 14 percent. Twenty percent of corn was harvested last week bringing progress to 43 percent complete, statewide. Producers continue to deal with high grain moisture levels; however, average moisture of corn being harvested fell 4 points last week to 23 percent.

Corn condition was rated 72 percent good to excellent. Corn mold has been reported with varying levels of severity in some locations. Sugar beet harvest was nearly complete at 97 percent while sunflowers were 59 percent harvested, compared to 31 percent last week.

Conditions were mild and dry early in the week. Daytime highs climbed into the 50s and 60s throughout Minnesota, which is 10 to nearly 20 above normal for mid-November. A cold front began to push across the state Nov. 11 and 12. By Nov. 13, temperatures fell into the upper 30s northwest to the low 50s southeast. Light rain and drizzle was widespread throughout the day. Warmer, drier weather returned Nov. 15 with highs in the upper 30s in the far north to near 50 in the southwest. Surplus soil moisture supplies declined for the second straight week. Thirty-four percent of the state's topsoil was rated surplus for moisture, down from 41 percent last week and 55 percent two weeks ago.
