Wyobraska cattle sales report

The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska, western North and South Dakota feedlots for the week ending Oct. 24, totaled 10,446 head compared to 7,100 head last week and 13,000 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week at Wyoming auctions, feeder steers under 500 pounds sold steady to $4 higher, over 500 pounds were steady to $2 higher, and yearlings over 700 pounds were firm to $4 higher. Feeder heifers under 550 pounds sold steady to firm, and some instances were $1 to $2 higher, except 400- to 450-pound heifers at Riverton Livestock were steady to $2 lower. Feeder heifers over 550 pounds were steady to $2 higher, and yearling heifers were firm to $4 higher. There were many top quality calves and yearlings with many all-natural yearlings that sold with good weighing conditions, and preconditioned calves all sold with good demand. Direct trade was very slow. There were not enough sales reported for a price comparison, except few comparable 900-pound steers were $2 higher. Demand was light to moderate. Buyer inquiry was light to moderate for moderate to heavy offerings. Unless otherwise noted direct prices were current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent, and with a 5 to 10 cent slide on calves and 3 to 6 cent slide on yearlings from base weight. Steers made up approximately 53% of the total receipts, heifers 47%, with 42% over 600 pounds. Direct sales accounted for 600 head of the total receipts.
