AdvertisementAFA Leaders Conference 2009 set for Nov. 5 to 8On Nov. 5 to 8, more than 480 outstanding college students from over 70 universities from around the country will gather to learn from and interact with prominent leaders in the agriculture and food industry at the 2009 AFA Leaders Conference. The AFA Leaders Conference is a three-track program designed to offer college men and women unique opportunities in personal and professional development that correspond with their years in college. The Track One program is designed for freshmen and focuses on personal assessment. The Track Two program is designed for sophomores/juniors and focuses on communication. The Track Three program is designed for juniors/seniors and focuses on living and working in the global market. Students who attend AFA Leaders Conference will benefit from sessions facilitated by more than 100 nationally recognized leaders in agriculture, business, government and education. The opening Welcome Session will feature remarks from Sandy Kemper, AFA Board Chairman and Catherine Adams Ph.D., RdR Solutions Consulting, formerly with McDonald's Corporation. Additional features of the program include: Mark Sanborn, The Encore Effect as the opening keynote presenter on Nov. 5 and Dr. Scott Vernon, Cal Poly University, Ilovefarmers.org, providing the closing keynote comments on Nov. 8. In addition, AFA will honor Carl Casale, Executive Vice President and CFO, Monsanto Company and Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond, Missouri, as recipients of the annual AFA Leader In Agriculture Award. Both Mr. Casale and Senator Bond will be presented their award during the Leader In Agriculture Award dinner on Nov. 6. The Award is presented annually to two individuals who have made significant contributions within the food and agriculture industry and have a record of supporting career and leader development for young men and women in agriculture. The AFA Opportunity Fair, another important component of AFA Leaders Conference, provides a unique environment for human resource representatives to communicate, advocate and mentor AFA students about opportunities available within the industry. Corporations, associations and colleges/universities representing the scope of the industry recruit AFA students for intern, full-time employment and graduate studies. The 2009 AFA Leaders Conference theme, "Agriculture: Many Sparks. One Fire," embodies the very nature of the agriculture industry. While the industry is comprised of many individuals, it takes everyone's cohesive efforts to generate the blaze that is agriculture. During the conference, students will be reminded that they are the important spark in the agriculture industry and without them, the fire would be reduced to nothing more than a flicker.
