Extension offers business management class

Wyoming

Young farmers and new agricultural producers will build a set of financial, legal, risk management and strategic marketing skills in Challenge Group 2009, a University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service program in Washakie County. The class begins Nov. 2

Challenge Group 2009 is being offered this fall and winter in Worland. "This program will challenge families to think comprehensively about their operations, interact closely with peers and build management skills," said Jim Gill, UW CES educator in Worland.

In the program, participants will develop a complete business plan and tour classmates' operations, and participants' financial records will be confidentially analyzed by a UW economist to highlight opportunities for improved risk management and cost control.

Each session focuses on a management area: family expectations, a business plan, financial statements, profitability benchmarks, a marketing plan, risk identification, insurance, labor management and farm business succession.

Instructors include Cole Ehmke, UW CES agricultural entrepreneurship specialist, and John Hewlett, UW CES farm/ranch management specialist in agricultural and applied economics. Additional speakers will be at many sessions, said Gill.

The program will meet beginning Nov. 2 at the Worland UW CES office, 1700 Culbertson Ave. The class schedule includes Nov. 10 and 17, Dec. 1, 9, 15 and 22, Jan. 5, and Jan. 19 as an extra day in case inclement weather cancels a session. Classroom work will begin at 8:30 a.m. After lunch, the group will tour an agricultural operation.

Brochures and applications are available from Gill. He can be reached at 307-347-3431 or JRGill@uwyo.edu. There is a $150 registration fee, of which $100 will be given back to participants who successfully complete the class.
