AdvertisementAuctioneers at Dec. 2 Parsons Livestock Market contest will qualify for 2010 WLACThe last eight spots in Livestock Marketing Association's 2010 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship (WLAC) will be on the line in Parson, Kan., Dec. 2, at the Parsons Livestock Market Inc. The market is hosting 36 contestants in the last quarterfinal qualifying contest for next summer's WLAC, which will be held June 19, 2010 at the Oklahoma National Stockyards in Oklahoma City. The sale here will start at noon. Three winners--champion, reserve champion and runner-up champion--will be named after the contest in Parsons, Kan. These three, and the next five highest scorers, then move on to the Oklahoma contest, often called the "Super Bowl" and the "World Series" of the profession. Next year's WLAC will be the 47th annual. It was created and is conducted by LMA, the national trade association for progressive marketing businesses like Parsons Livestock. Market owner Mark McKee said he expects up to 3,000 head of cattle, consisting of feeders, weaned and unweaned calves. "We're proud to represent LMA, and competitive marketing," he said. McKee added he was pleased when LMA, four years ago, began the qualifying contests for the WLAC. "That gave more markets, like ours, a chance to participate in the Championship. It also lets us show off quality cattle, from some of our area's top producers." Eight contestants from each of the three previous qualifying contests are also going to the June WLAC. Those contests were conducted Sept. 25 in Billings, Mont., Oct. 9 in Crawford, Neb., and Oct. 15 in Calhoun, Ga. All the contests are actual livestock sales, with buyers on the seats. Contestants must be at least 18 years old, and employed and sponsored by a livestock market. Contest judges, all LMA members, score each contestant on vocal clarity and quality, bid-catching ability, conduct of the sale and personal expression. Judges also ask the question, "Would I hire this auctioneer?" The master of ceremonies will be the reigning champion, Ty Thompson, of Billings, Mont. He won the title in June in Fergus Falls, Minn. The Parsons contestants and their hometowns are: Justin Abell, Sigourney, Iowa; Jeremy Anstine, Holden, Mo.; Chris Arnaman, Hamilton, Mo.; Alfred (A.J.) Austin IV, Paragould, Ark.; Bailey Ballou, Elgin, Okla.; Byron Bina, Herington, Kan.; Jason A. Boucher, Riley, Kan.; Leon Caselman, Long Lane, Mo.; Jake Cheechov, Eugene, Ore.; Dan Clark, Winner, S.D.; John Cline, Onaga, Kan.; Tate Cobb, Guymon, Okla.; Lance Cochran, Medford, Okla.; Charly Cummings, Yates Center, Kan.; Shannon Davis, Yantis, Texas; Kyle Elwood, Abilene, Kan.; Daniel Enyeart, Dalton, Mo.; Dustin Focht, Stillwater, Okla.; Dillon Gross, Bradleyville, Mo.; Jim Hertzog, Butler, Mo.; Kent Korte, Metropolis, Ill.; Lynn Langvardt, Chapman, Kan.; H. Daniel Lanier, Hurt, Va.; Mike "Hoss" Manske, Shattuck, Okla.; Brian Marlin, Inola, Okla.; Alex Mattila, Brush Prairie, Wash.; Jason L. Miller, Quaker City, Ohio; Peter Raffan, Armstrong, B.C.; Roger D. Robinson, Orleans, Ind.; Jeff Showalter, Broadway, Va.; Ed Spencer, Logan, Iowa.; Larry Don Suckla, Dolores, Colo.; Rusty Taylor, White City, Kan.; Joel Tuxhorn, Guymon, Okla.; Garren Walrod, Randolph, Kan.; and Al Wessel, Long Prairie, Minn. The champion in each qualifying contest receives a cash award and a custom-made belt buckle. The reserve and runner-up champions in each contest also receive custom belt buckles. The three titlists at the June WLAC--world champion, reserve and runner-up world champion--will take home thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. LMA President Bobby Smith said LMA conducts the WLAC--and the qualifying contests--to spotlight the competitive livestock marketing system and the continuing importance of the auctioneer in that system. McKee invited past and present customers, "and anyone who enjoys the sound of great auctioneers, to be with us on the second." The Parsons market is on Highway 59, a half-mile south of the Highway 59 and Highway 400 junction. There is no charge to watch the contest. The Parsons contest, and the WLAC, will be broadcast live at www.lmaauctions.com. Advertisement
