Agriland has another successful year at Kansas State Fair

Kansas

For State Fair attendees who visited the Pride of Kansas building, Agriland was likely a memorable experience. A soil tunnel with worms, roots and other creepy-crawlers; a real-life combine cab; a six-foot tall, milk-able model of a Holstein cow named Blossom; and the Kansas Beef Council's cattle-herding simulation were among children's favorite items this year in the Agriland display

Once again, the Agriland display experienced another successful year at the Kansas State Fair, held in Hutchinson, Kan., Sept. 11 to 20. Agriland is an interactive, educational display for youth, and it is located in the Pride of Kansas building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds each year.

As part of the Agriland experience, children stop at different stations, such as those mentioned. Each station teaches them about a different aspect of the agriculture industry and how it affects them and their lives each day. The new components to Agriland this year included a bigger greenhouse, Kansas Beef Council's cattle-herding simulation, a prairie food web, and displays of both plant growth cycles and careers in agriculture.

Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom has helped sponsor Agriland for several years. KFAC, a non-profit foundation in Manhattan, works to educate Kansans about the connection between agriculture and the food on their plate, their clothing, and the dozens of other products they use each day.

To accomplish this goal, the foundation uses hands-on activities and resources that make learning about agriculture fun. KFAC offers a variety of educational resources for teachers and students including teacher guides, lesson plans, and student magazines; all designed with state curriculum standards in mind.

More information about KFAC and its resources can be found on its website at www.ksagclassroom.org, or by calling the office at 785-532-7946.

Other sponsors for Agriland this year included: Kansas Agri-Women, Kansas Beef Council, Kansas Corn Commission & Kansas Corn Growers Association, Kansas Dairy Association, Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission, Kansas Grain Sorghum Producers, Kansas Soybean Commission, Kansas Wheat, and Kansas Sunflower Association.
