Pilot program becoming a reality

By Randy Buhler

CSU Extension Agent, agronomy, Logan County

At the annual forum for CSU Extension in early October, Dr. Lou Swanson confirmed that a proposed pilot program to place a CSU Regional Center in Sterling would happen. Dr. Swanson is the Vice Provost for Outreach and Strategic Partnerships.

The Center will serve as a front door to the CSU System, which includes CSU-Fort Collins, CSU-Pueblo, and CSU Global. The Center is to be funded and staffed by the CSU Division of Continuing Education. It will offer recruitment and application materials for these campuses.

In addition to the Continuing Education staff, up to three regional specialists will be located at the Center. These specialist positions will be funded and supervised by CSU Extension. The period of time the Center pilot program is operational is July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2013. That is three fiscal years for the University.

Here is where you come into the picture. CSU is asking the residents of Northeastern Colorado which areas of expertise are most beneficial to us. These specialists are not meant to replace or replicate the existing agents, but to compliment or add to the expertise already available. The area CSU Extension is planning to cover is Sedgwick, Phillips, Logan, Morgan, Yuma, Washington, Kit Carson, Cheyenne, and Lincoln counties.

You should be aware that Ron Meyer has just returned to CSU Extension after a hiatus into the corporate world. He is returning to Burlington as an area agronomy agent. His corporate contacts should prove helpful in continuing his work, especially with sunflowers.

The areas of expertise that CSU Extension supports with on campus specialists and county agents includes 4-H youth development, horticulture, production agriculture, family and consumer sciences, community development, and natural resources.

The first question is "If CSU Extension could provide additional resources in Eastern Colorado for the next three years, what types of expertise would be of greatest benefit?" They would also like to know why this is important and what issues need to be addressed. The second question is "During a three-year pilot program, what would you like to see the Extension specialist(s) accomplish, deliver, do, or develop in this area?"

CSU is developing an alliance with Northeastern Junior College to deliver on-site educational product and/or services. Dr. Lance Bolton is instrumental in forging the alliance with Dr. Tony Frank, president of CSU, and Dr. Lou Swanson to accomplish this outreach effort.
