Water processing plant for Spring River planned

RIVERTON, Kan. (AP)--Federal stimulus money is fueling plans for a plant to process water from Spring River for public use.

The Public Wholesale Water Supply District No. 19 was awarded an $8.9 million grant and a $3.3 million loan in federal stimulus funding last month.

Christie McReynolds, area specialist with U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development in Chanute, says the work on legal considerations, purchasing easements and designing the plant is under way.

Plans call for the water-treatment plant to be built on a 12-acre site near Riverton. It would include a 200,000-gallon, elevated storage tank and booster station.

The plant is scheduled for completion in late 2011. It would provide water for four rural water districts in Cherokee County and the city of Columbus.
