Producer input needed for a proposed mobile animal harvest facility in southeast Colorado
There has been a proposal made to obtain a Mobile Animal Harvest facility for Southeast Colorado. Southeast Colorado RC&D and CSU Extension will be holding a series of meetings in the Southeast Area to present an overview of the project, determine the amount of interest from local livestock producers, and the possible availability of animal numbers to make a facility feasible. Current plans are for the facility to harvest beef, swine, sheep, and goats.
Similar facilities in the United States are certified for Federal Meat Inspection. If properly inspected facilities for cutting and wrapping can be found, the product may then be sold for retail trade, to restaurants, to schools, etc.
The proposal is not intended to take business away from current enterprises but could offer employment opportunities that are not currently available. Also, it may increase the marketing opportunities for area livestock producers that may not be available at the present time.
The meeting schedule is as follows:
May 14--Kim, Colorado, Old Gym, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
May 14--Springfield, Colorado, Resource Center, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
May 15--Lamar, Colorado County Annex Mezzanine, 10 a.m. to noon
May 15--Las Animas CSU Extension Office meeting room, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
