Horse, rider drown while herding cattle

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP)--A 20-year-old Nickerson man and the horse he was riding have drowned while herding cattle.

Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said emergency personnel were called late May 9 to a pond in southwest Reno County.

Henderson said Chance Ramsey was helping two other people herd cattle on horses when a cow strayed and Ramsey went after it.

The other two people lost sight of Ramsey and found Ramsey submerged in the pond.

Efforts to revive Ramsey were not successful, and the horse died as well.
