Grand Island could save money on Nebraska fair move

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP)--Nebraska lawmakers have advanced a bill that would cut $1.5 million from Grand Island's costs of moving the State Fair there from Lincoln.

Senators spent May 11 on the second round of debate on the measure (LB224), which would credit Grand Island for the money needed to move ball fields to make way for a fairgrounds parking lot.

Grand Island is supposed to contribute $8.5 million to the expected $42 million cost of moving the fair.

Sen. Tom Carlson of Holdrege, chairman of the Agriculture Committee, has said lower-than-expected construction bids for work on the new fairgrounds make the deal possible.
