Ft. Smith livestock auction news

The Ft. Smith Livestock, Ft. Smith, Ark., reported receipts of 936 head May 18, compared to 370 head last week and 784 head last year, according to the Arkansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Little Rock, Ark.

Compared to last week, slaughter cows and bulls were $2 to $4 higher. Feeder steers and heifers over 400 pounds were steady to $3 lower, under 400 pounds were $4 higher. The supply included 496 feeder calves, 300 feeder yearlings, 37 replacement cows, 94 slaughter cows, 9 slaughter bulls, and 0 replacement cows. The feeder supply consisted of about 40% English breed and English crosses, 30% exotic breed and exotic crosses, 30% Brahman and Brahman crosses, and 0% Holsteins and other dairy breeds. The feeder supply included about 55% steers and bulls and 45% heifers.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1000 to 1500 lbs., 52.00 to 56.50; high dressing, 57.00 to 61.50; low dressing, 47.00 to 51.50. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 950 to 1400 lbs., 48.00 to 52.50; high dressing, 53.00 to 57.50; low dressing, 43.00 to 47.50. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 900 to 1300 lbs., 45.00 to 49.50; high dressing, 50.00 to 55.00; low dressing, 40.00 to 44.50.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1000 to 2100 lbs., 57.50 to 61.50; high dressing, 62.00 to 67.50.

Replacement cows: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 2 to 3 years old, 730 to 1050 lbs., open cows, 63.00 to 81.00; 3 to 6 years old, 800 to 1300 lbs., open cows, 45.00 to 61.00; 2 to 3 years old, 800 to 950 lbs., third stage, 640.00 to 830.00 per head.

Pairs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 2 to 3 years old, 650 to 750 lbs., with 100- to 200-lb. calves, 700.00 to 710.00 per pair.
