Upcoming Beef 706 program open to Texas youthTexas Texas youth are encouraged to participate in an upcoming checkoff-funded Beef 706 program offered at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, June 2 and 3, and June 4 and 5. The program will offer valuable insight from industry experts and provide a rare hands-on learning experience about beef quality management. For more than 20 years, Beef 706 has educated producers about factors impacting the safety and quality of beef. Now, in cooperation with Texas AgriLife Extension and Texas Tech University, the Texas Beef Council is hosting two sessions of the Beef 706 program aimed at educating youth ages 16 through 19. "In this unique two-day program participates will learn everything from quality and yield grading, to hands-on carcass fabrication," said Dr. Dan Hale, Extension meat specialist, Texas AgriLife Extension. "Beef 706 will provide beef quality information to Texas youth allowing them to view cattle as not just livestock, but as a food product." Participants will learn valuable information on industry topics such as food safety, buying and selling cattle on a grid, live market steer evaluation, animal welfare, and selection and genetic tools for quality beef production. The program will also include tours of a local feedyard and harvesting facility. All Beef 706 registration forms must be received by May 19. For registration information, please contact Moriah Beyers at 806-742.2805 ext. 245 or moriah.beyers@ttu.edu.
