U.S., EU strike deal to end beef trade spat

BRUSSELS (AP)--The United States and the European Union struck a dea,l May 6, to end a 13-year old trade spat over hormone-treated beef, a move that will see the U.S. drop its threat to slap retaliatory import duties on Italian mineral water and French Roquefort cheese.

The European Commission said officials have agreed that the U.S. would not impose the sanctions on EU food, due to come into force in early May. In return, the EU has promised to import more high-quality U.S. beef over the next four years.

The deal ends a 13-year row over an EU ban on hormone-treated beef. The EU claims that beef treated with certain hormones poses a risk to human health.

The U.S. and Canada say the EU has no solid scientific evidence for a ban and have won legal challenges against the EU at the World Trade Organization.
