Texas wheat production down 35 percent from last year

According to a May 1 survey conducted by the USDA-NASS, Texas field office, Texas wheat producers expect to harvest 64.8 million bushels, down 35 percent from 2008 and down 54 percent from 2007. This forecast is up 4 percent from the Texas April forecast.
Statewide yield is expected to average 27 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from last year, and down 10 bushels from two years ago. Harvested acreage for grain, at 2.4 million acres, is down 27 percent from 2008.
Production on the Northern High Plains is forecast at 36.5 million bushels, up 25 percent from last year. Winter wheat production on the Blacklands is forecast at 11.4 million bushels, down 31 percent from last year. The Low Plains' production is estimated at 6.5 million bushels, down 76 percent from last year.
United States winter wheat production for 2009 is forecast at 1.50 billion bushels, down 20 percent from 2008. Yield is expected to average 44.2 bushels per acre, 3.0 bushels less than a year ago. Acreage to be harvested for grain is expected to total 34.0 million acres, down 14 percent from last season.
