State wheat forecast at 80.5 million bushels

The state's May 1, wheat production is forecast at 80.5 million bushels, down 52 percent from last year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Oklahoma Field Office. Acres expected to be harvested for grain, at 3.5 million acres, are down 1 million acres from last year. Average yield is forecast at 23.0 bushels per acre, down 14 bushels from 2008.

Final 2008 cotton production is set at 262,000 bales, down 7 percent from 2007. The 155,000 harvested acres were down 6 percent from last year. An average yield of 811 pounds per acre was down 6 pounds from 2007. Cottonseed production for Oklahoma totaled 90.5 tons, down 15 percent from 2007.

Hay stocks on farms May 1, totaled 1 million tons, down 38 percent from last year's 1.6 million tons.

In the United States, winter wheat production is forecast at 1.50 billion bushels, down 20 percent from 2008. Based on May 1 conditions, the U.S. yield is forecast at 44.2 bushels per acre, down 3.0 bushels from last year.

Selected states and their winter wheat production compared with 2008 include Kansas, 340.0 million bushels, down 4 percent; Washington, 102.0 million bushels, up 6 percent; Texas, 64.8 million bushels, down 35 percent; and Colorado, 73.6 million bushels, up 29 percent.

Final 2008 cotton production is set 12.8 million bales, down 33 percent from last year.
