Northern Beef financial woes mount

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP)--Although backers say the Northern Beef Packers plant at Aberdeen will open, possibly this fall, liens filed for unpaid work are approaching $8 million.

A dozen mechanic's liens have been filed against the Northern Beef Packers plant, and none have been resolved.

Dennis Hellwig, the prime investor in the plant that is being built on the south side of Aberdeen, says despite the troubles, the plant is going to open.

Original plans said the plant would open in late 2007, but flooding postponed that date.
